Jim Magary Obituary

Dr. James A. Magary, Noted Surgeon, went into the presence of his Lord and Savior on May 19, 2007 quietly and peacefully at home, surrounded by his family after a three year struggle with kidney cancer. Dr. Magary was born on February 22, 1954 in Decatur, Indiana, the second son of Rev. G. Robert and Marian Magary. He graduated from Wheaton College (1976), Rush Medical School, Chicago (1981), and completed Surgical Residency at the University of Wisconsin (1986). Dr. Magary has been a resident and practicing surgeon in the Phoenix area for over 20 years. He is survived by Jan, his loving and faithful wife of 30 years, three children, Peter, Erin and Nolan, parents, G. Robert and Marian Magary of Phoenix, two brothers, Dennis (Pam) of Chicago, Tim (Donna) of Phoenix, and a sister, Jenny (Paula) of Phoenix. Dr. Magary was a noted physician and surgeon. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, the Phoenix Surgical Society, and the Christian Medical and Dental Society. In 2003 he established a Bariatric clinic at Paradise Valley Hospital and continued to direct its services until his illness. Dr. Magary was the recipient of a number of awards including the Paradise Valley Hospital 2006 Physician of Excellence Award for Growth.Dr. Magary's passion lay in medical missions in various parts of the world but his heart was captured by the Bolivian people whose love led him to organize yearly medical-team trips to Trinidad, Bolivia called, "Share the Dream." He is a member of Highlands Church in Phoenix and contributed regularly to the services as a member of the worship team. A memorial service will be held at Highlands Church, 9050 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd, Scottsdale, Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 P.M.
